An interview of Ted Egri conducted 1965 March 22, by Sylvia Loomis, for the Archives of American Art. Egri speaks of his youth; his education at the Roerich Museum Art Institute; parental influence; teaching at the Art Institute in Kansas City; working for the Federal Art Project on a poster project in 1936; the easel painting project, and the mural project; his post-FAP career; joining the U.S. Navy and making maps during World War II; the effect of the WPA years on his career; developing his work as a sculptor; going back to teaching for a while; and joining the Artists Equity Association.

Federal aid art project during the Depression. The Federal Art Project (FAP) fell under the jurisdiction of Federal Project No. 1 of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), established in May 1935 specifically as a work relief program for unemployed artists. Each state and territory had its own programsand were administered aid from the federal government via a local agency. Ted Egri was born in New York City in 1913. While in the Navy, he worked drafting maps. During his service, Egri drew and painted extensively. Although he did not receive any formal academic degrees in the arts, he studied at art schools in New York City and New Mexico, and eventually became a successful sculptor. In 1950, Egri and his wife move to Taos, N.M. where he taught sculpture, life drawing, still life drawing, and painting, and was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Wyoming in Lar...
